COMMENTS:
This edition contains two versions for double bass, with the solo part presented in two different octaves: a higher and a lower version. The octaves in the piano part have been slightly adapted from the original solo piano version, mainly because certain melodic passages have to be performed one octave lower on the double bass, even in the higher version. In this way, the piano part corresponds more naturally with the lower register of the solo line, as can be heard in the video example below.
In the editor’s opinion, the piece loses none of its charm through these adjustments; it remains equally effective when the melody is performed in the higher octave. A version in which the solo double-bass part is played one octave lower than in the video example has also been tested. Although this lower version is also musically convincing, the higher version ultimately proves more effective.
The arrangement also provides an excellent basis for accompaniment by string orchestra. The orchestration has already been completed, although it has not yet been tested in performance. The orchestral material will be published at a later stage.
